Last month, it was announced that Patrick Mahomes and the Kansas City Chiefs were nominated for three ESPY awards. While the 2023 edition of the ESPYS wasn’t slated to air until later on Wednesday, Mahomes is already set to be taking home at least one piece of hardware from the event.  According to Field Yates of ESPN, a Wednesday edition of NFL LIVE announced that Mahomes has won the 2023 ESPY award for Best NFL Player:

This is the second time that Mahomes has won the ESPY for Best NFL Player, as he finished in first place back in 2019 following his first MVP campaign. The 27-year-old is coming off a season that saw him win league MVP for the second time, largely fueled by the Chiefs’ 14-3 regular-season record. After the Chiefs lost wide receiver Tyreek Hill to the Miami Dolphins via trade, Mahomes threw for 5,250 yards and 41 touchdowns — both league-leading numbers — with just 12 interceptions in the process. He then won Super Bowl LVII MVP against the Philadelphia Eagles with a three-touchdown performance.

Mahomes is also nominated for Best Athlete (Men’s Sports) at the 2023 ESPYS, with the Chiefs being nominated for the Best Team award. Tight end Travis Kelce will present an award on Wednesday evening, and there will also be plenty of other entertainment on a night that recognizes the 30th anniversary of the V Foundation. Here’s a bit more information on the event from Arrowhead Report’s previous coverage of the Chiefs’ nominations:

The 2023 ESPYS, presented by Capital One, are presented by networks ABC and ESPN and awards will be handed out to the most impressive athletic achievements or performances of this past sports year. The ESPY acronym, representing the ceremony that’s been in place since 1993, stands for Excellence in Sports Performance Yearly. This year’s ESPYS will be broadcast on July 12 at 8:00 p.m. ET on ABC. Athletes will be invited to attend in person at the Microsoft Theatre in Los Angeles, CA.
