Patrick Mahomes’ wife, Brittany Mahomes, put the star Chiefs quarterback in the friend zone before their happily ever after. The high school sweethearts, both 27, reminisced on the early stages of their relationship in the new Netflix docu-series “Quarterback,” premiering July 12, where Mahomes explained how he courted Brittany.
In the first episode of the series — which follows the Chiefs star, as well as Vikings quarterback Kirk Cousins and former Falcons signal-caller Marcus Mariota (Eagles) on-and-off the field throughout the entire 2022 season — Mahomes explained the one gesture that helped him escape the friend zone.
“We kinda met in seventh, eighth grade,” Mahomes said. “She was the grade above me, I was kind of the best friend, in the friend zone forever. “I used to walk her to class and was trying to flirt. When I was a sophomore in high school, she was a junior. I actually got her a rose … I kinda … I had a crush on her. But, I was getting a rose as a joke for Valentine’s Day.”
However, Brittany didn’t take it that way. “He thought it was a joke,” said Brittany, the co-owner of KC Current. “I thought it was the cutest thing in the world. And then everyone at our lunch table started chanting, ‘Kiss him, kiss him,’ and made it really awkward cause we were ‘just friends’ so that’s kind of what started it and then I thought it was cute.
“… When they were chanting, I thought it was kind of awkward and it was funny. I was like, ‘Okay this guy is actually kind of cute. Maybe I do like him.’ So then we just started talking and then started dating.’
Elsewhere in the premiere episode, cameras captured Mahomes’ birthday party (he turned 27 on Sept. 17), where a then-pregnant Brittany forced him to take photos. “He’s not a picture guy… so getting good photos with him is a struggle,” Brittany said in a confessional. When Mahomes jokingly walked away and said he was done taking photos, Brittany quipped: “Babe I’m pregnant, so I need all the angles.”
Brittany gave birth to the couple’s second child, a son named Patrick “Bronze” Lavon Mahomes III, on Nov. 28. They welcomed their son eight months after tying the knot in an intimate ceremony in Hawaii (in March 2022), where their daughter, Sterling Skye, 2, served as the flower girl.
Last month, Mahomes and Brittany attended the Chiefs’ championship ring ceremony at Union Station in Kansas City, which came months after the team beat the Eagles 38-35 in Super Bowl LVII in February.
For the first time ever, the NFL allowed quarterbacks to be mic’d up for every single game of a season in the Neflix’s “Quarterback,” executive produced by Peyton Manning. Mahomes and the Chiefs will open the 2023 season against the Lions on Thursday, Sept. 7.
