Patrick Mahomes, the Kansas City Chiefs’ star quarterback, is a familiar name in the NFL due to his impressive accomplishments, including two MVP awards, numerous league-leading records and two Super Bowl titles, where he was named MVP on both occasions. However, a lesser-known fact about Mahomes is his interest in punting. He serves as the team’s backup punter, a revelation made by Chiefs special teams coordinator Dave Toub.
That’s particularly significant as the primary punter, Tommy Townsend, has been dealing with a knee injury. Townsend, known for his exceptional punting skills, has had little competition in the punting department, which is likely why Mahomes hasn’t had a chance to showcase his punting abilities so far.
Will Patrick Mahomes punt?
It’s still not certain that Patrick Mahomes will have a go at punting, but he’d certainly be keen to try it out if called upon. In a recent game against the Jacksonville Jaguars, it seemed Mahomes might finally have his chance to punt. However, the opportunity went to Townsend, who pinned the ball at the 2-yard line.
The NFL superstar then took to X on Thursday to respond to special teams coordinator Toub’s comments by teasing his fans. “I mean, if Travis [Kelce] gets a punt before I do, I’m gonna be kind of pissed off,” he noted. The quarterback also interacted with JJ Watt on social media.
