Rick Macci is that one coach in tennis who always seems to find the next big thing. Serena Williams, Venus Williams, Jennifer Capriati, and Andy Roddick are some of the few greats who Macci coached. Now, he has shown interest in partnering up with British star Emma Raducanu, who is currently struggling to find form. While Macci is a great choice for a coach, John McEnroe is unsure of how the partnership will transpire.
Macci has defended Raducanu many times. Since the 2021 US Open, Raducanu has struggled to recreate similar glory. Her downfall caught the attention of the media, and she was chastised for her poor performances on the tennis court. But Macci is one of the few who have defended the young British star.
John McEnroe unsure about the potential partnership of Emma Raducanu and Rick Macci
As Raducanu is still on her hiatus, she is falling rapidly in the WTA rankings. After her partnership with Sebastian Sachs ended, Raducanu is looking for her sixth coach just in two years. Moreover, Raducanu will miss Wimbledon this year. While she recovers from three surgeries, she has plenty of time to plan her future moves.
Macci admitted he is eager to work with Raducanu and lead her back to the glory days. He believes that there is a lot of potential in Raducanu and she can turn it around. However, John McEnroe is not confident about the potential partnership.
He told the Metro, “I don’t know Rick Macci but I know of him through working with the Williams sisters, Jennifer Capriati and a bunch of players. He obviously has the respect of a lot of people, and I could be wrong, but I’ve not heard of him being much of a traveling coach.” Although he has his reservations, he believes that Macci would coach the rising British star for the right price.
When Macci reached out to coach Raducanu
Rick Macci reached out to Raducanu’s manager after learning of her injuries. He stated that he could provide vital support to the young Briton. Not only in terms of tactics but also in helping her in any mental issues related to the sport. The coach reasoned that her path to the 2021 US Open win was a testament to her immense talent. He also stated that he would be ready to help her in the mental aspect of the game.
