The Chicago Sky have made an unexpected impression in the WNBA this season. Initially regarded as a middle-of-the-pack team with first-year head coach Teresa Weatherspoon at the helm, they have quickly proven their critics wrong.

With a current record of 2-1, the Sky recently secured a big victory against the New York Liberty, winning 90-81 on the road. This win handed the Liberty their first loss of the season, bringing their record to 4-1.  “We didn’t have the mindset,” Liberty head coach Sandy Brondello said.

“I said that’s a tough matchup for us because they’re very aggressive in what they do. It was tough for us all night long. We all need to take ownership.  “We’re not where we need to be. We need to have a little more grittiness and griminess and resiliency, and we didn’t show that tonight.”

Weatherspoon has successfully transformed the Sky into one of the league’s most resilient and defense-oriented teams. Her ability to seamlessly incorporate rookie Angel Reese into the lineup has been a key factor, with the rookie the challenges of adjusting to the professional level.

Reese hails Weatherspoon

Reese has shown promise in her role with Chicago and is poised to grow even more as she gains experience. Reflecting on the team’s early achievements, Reese was full of praise for Weatherspoon.

“I love my coach,” Reese said.   “Tell them respect you. You one of one.”
