Travis Kelce sent out a strong message to his Kansas City Chiefs teammates following their surprising loss to the Denver Broncos. The defending Super Bowl champions could only manage nine points as the Broncos took their revenge after the Chiefs defeated them on Oct. 13.
The Broncos won their third game of the season while the Chiefs lost their second game of the campaign. And on his “New Heights” podcast with his brother and Philadelphia Eagles center Jason Kelce, the 34-year-old expressed his disappointed with his team’s offensive deficiencies over the weekend.
“F***, that’s embarrassing, man,” Kelce began. “I don’t think I’ve been in a situation where we’ve stalled this much as an offense throughout the year, definitely at this point in the season. We got a lot of guys that usually figure out how to get this thing going, and it’s just frustrating, man. Not putting up touchdowns week after week after week is getting old.
“It’s getting old to watch, I know it, Chiefs kingdom, I know it is. It’s not like what we’ve been in the past. In my mind, we’ve got the best offensive mind in the game, we got the best quarterback, so it’s unacceptable.”
The Chiefs’ offense is usually one of the best in the league but after eight games this season, they rank 12th in scoring with 23.4 points per game. They have scored more than 30 points just twice this season and have been held to 20 points or less four times and twice in the last three games.
With some of these statistics in mind, Kelce said he and his teammates planned to be more attacking against the Broncos. But quarterback Patrick Mahomes uncharacteristically threw two interceptions and Kansas City turned the ball over five times, which stifled their progress up the field.
The team amassed just 275 total yards in its first loss to the Broncos in 16 games. The eight-time Pro Bowl star said the Broncos were shaper and hungrier than the Chiefs, which left him furious. “Felt awkward during the game, like we couldn’t get anything going,” added Kelce, who registered six catches for 58 yards on Sunday.
“You’re talking about that sense of urgency on the sideline, it didn’t feel like we had too much of that and when we finally had that sense of urgency, turned the ball over and get it ripped right out of our hearts.
“Our defense is playing their tail off, man. For us to keep turning it over, putting them in bad situations and then saving our tail, it’s getting real one-sided.” The Cheifs will look to return to winning ways when they face the rampaging Miami Dolphins on Sunday at Deutsche Bank Park in Frankfurt, Germany.
