Diana Ross is coming out to the 2025 Met Gala—and she wants the world to know. That’s likely why the music legend didn’t hold back for her big return to the steps of New York City’s Metropolitan Museum of Art, stepping out on May 15 in a bejeweled gown paired with an epic, white feather-trimmed coat and matching oversized fedora by Ugo Mozie. In fact, the 18-foot train on 81-year-old jacket—which was embroidered with the names of her kids and grandchildren—was so long that it took over a large part of the staircase as she and son Evan Ross made their way inside the party. And in keeping with the party’s dandyism-centric theme “Superfine: Tailoring Black Style,” Diana paid attention to the details, rocking large chandelier earrings and a jewel at the center of her forehead.
This marked the “I’m Coming Out” singer’s first Met Gala appearance in over 20 years. The last time she attended the prestigious fashion event was in 2006, when she wore a more understated red dress with a much shorter shawl. So, what’s Diana’s secret to nailing the perfect red carpet photo? “Once I walk in front of the camera or onstage, I try to forget if my dress is OK, forget about the makeup, the hair, if I’ve made the phone calls I was supposed to and all of that,” she told Elle in 2005. “I just want to have a good time and feel that my spirit is connected and that I’m happy.”
Calling herself a “perfectionist,” Diana added that she’s all about the glam. “I can’t even do a custom fitting until I have some eye makeup on,” she shared. “I just can’t tell what the costumes are going to look like—I’ve got to have my eyes done first. Every woman has something about her face that she loves. She has to get that ready and then she can do her stuff.”
