What are the Chiefs cooking this season? Whatever that is, it isn’t for the faint-hearted people. So the next time the Chiefs have a game, they must put a viewer discretion tag below it. No, we aren’t even joking. Just look at their record after Sunday’s nail-biter win over the Chargers. The Chiefs have now won an astonishing 15th straight game by one score.
This win also meant the Chiefs have clinched the AFC West title for the ninth straight season. And they could be coming after the Patriots’ 11 straight division titles record that looks in jeopardy now. Well, the Chiefs wouldn’t have been in this position if it wasn’t for Patrick Mahomes and their third-choice kicker Matthew Wright. Mahomes fourth-quarter game-winning drive helped the Chiefs set up for a 31-yard field goal.
Up came Wright, who had already kicked three field goals that night. But this one ended up being special out of the bunch, as it hit the left upright and doinked in off the post. It was the official account of the NFL that posted the clip and captioned it with, “A DOINK FOR THE DIVISION! IT’S GOOD! @CHIEFS WIN!” And that might have prompted Patrick Mahomes’ wife, Brittany Mahomes, to take a subtle dig against those people who criticised them.
Taking to her Instagram, the Lady in Red posted a picture of herself looking away from the camera that read, “If you’re not laughing at this point, you’re no fun😂👏🏼” Well, what can you really say right now? The Chiefs have now blocked a last-second kick against the Broncos. And then went on to win against the Raiders 19-17 thanks to a botched snap. All of those came against their divisional rivals, which kept them rooted at the top spot in the AFC West.
There were even fans who joined in to express their thoughts on the Chiefs’ doink win. One of them said, “Of course their doink was good.” Another called them out for using Black Magic to win games this season, “With that ricochet game-winning kick, the Chiefs have now set the single-season record for BMOE (Black Magic over Expectation).” Now, after winning the division, the Chiefs have completed their first goal for this season.
Patrick Mahomes’ Chiefs reach first milestone of the season
After the game, the Chiefs were found wearing AFC West Championship-winning T-shirts and hats. But considering the dominance they have shown over the past 9 seasons, isn’t it too familiar? Patrick Mahomes doesn’t see it that way. He believes it’s their first goal every year, “Our first goal every single year to win the AFC West, and it’s a great division. We’re in a lot of rivalries where everybody’s played each other tough and three teams are going to probably make the playoffs. That speaks to the division that we play in.”
Apart from their dominance in the AFC West, the Chiefs have now won their six games on the final play. So Reid was asked whether this year’s title offers any different feeling to them, “Every year is a little bit different on how we’ve gotten there. But I’m proud of our guys who are just hanging in there. We have so many tight names, more so than some of these other years. The guys keep hanging in there and feeling like good things are going to happen, and they keep battling.”
Well, it looks like the Chiefs have that lady luck riding with them all season. Without it, who knows? Probably, they wouldn’t have won the division like they did on Sunday.
