NFL fans have noticed a troubling video showing the injured Patrick Mahomes during practice.
The three-time Super Bowl MVP quarterback suffered a mild high ankle sprain during the Kansas City Chiefs’ victory over the Cleveland Browns in Week 15.
Surprisingly, Mahomes fully participated in Tuesday’s practice which was a good sign for his chances to start against the Houston Texans on Saturday. However, fans weren’t impressed with a social media clip of Mahomes participating in practice. The 29-year-old was spotted “testing his ankle” at the practice in Kansas City.
Mahomes was moving slowly and flexing his right ankle. Fans weren’t encouraged by Mahomes’ status for Week 16 in the X video posted by SB Nation’s Pete Sweeney. “Dude should not even be out there. Needs a break physically and mentally right now,” one commented. “Bro just sit out,” another wrote. “He should not be playing,” a third added.
Head coach Andy Reid provided an update on Mahomes after the practice. “I think this one’s a little bit more day-to-day,” the 66-year-old said about the quarterback’s injury.
“Let’s just see what he does, how he does, [how he] feels. “He’s always honest with me, so he’s going to shoot me straight on it ,and I’ll be able to see him. “Today’s a lighter day so we can get him in there and moving around a little bit.”
Reid also revealed that the short turnaround from Saturday’s game to their Christmas game against the Pittsburgh Steelers won’t impact their plans with Mahomes. If Mahomes is unable to play this week, the 13-1 Chiefs will turn to backup Carson Wentz to start. Wentz made both of his completions after replacing Mahomes last weekend.
Kansas City will have plenty to play for this week as they will be eyeing to secure the No. 1 seed, which has a first-round playoff bye and home-field advantage attached to it. The AFC West champions can clinch the top AFC spot with two wins in their last three games. “I wouldn’t say it’s dire that I play,” Mahomes said on Tuesday. “It’s not in the AFC Championship Game where we’re playing to get to the Super Bowl. “We have a little bit of room to kind of spare, but at the end of the day, we’re trying to win.
“We’re trying to win the football game and I’m a competitor. “I want to go out there and play, so I’ll push myself to get to the best place possible over these next few days and we’ll be able to make a decision then.”
