Emma Raducanu has been photographed in the gym working out as she tries to get herself back to full fitness. The British tennis star was forced to sit out the French Open and Wimbledon after having a small procedure on her hands, and another on her ankle. Having missed the summer events on clay and grass courts, the US Open champion from 2021 has been seen in the gym working on her preparation, as she tries to get back to full fitness after her operations.
She said on her Instagram that it was ‘nice to be reintroduced’ to the equipment, after several months away from physical exertion due to her injuries. The 30-second video showed Raducanu showing off a range of different skills including strength training and flexibility.
Back in May, Raducanu, 20, explained on Instagram why she needed to step away from the sport for some time. Raducanu wrote: ‘It is safe to say the last ten months have been difficult as I dealt with a recurring injury on a bone of both hands.
‘I tried my best to manage the pain and play through it for most of this year and end of last year by reducing practice load dramatically, missing weeks of training as well as cutting last season short to try to heal it. Unfortunately it is not enough. I’m having a minor procedure done on both hands to resolve the issues. ‘I am disappointed to share I will be out for the next few months and while I am at it I will have another minor procedure that is due on my ankle.
‘It pains me that I will miss the summer events and I tried to downplay the issues so I thank all my fans who continued to support me when you did not know the facts. Looking forward to seeing you all back out there.’ To recover from her injuries away from the spotlight, Raducanu flew to her grandmother’s flat on the edge of Bucharest in Romania.
And while she could not play in this year’s Wimbledon tournament – won by Marketa Vondrousova – she was able to turn up to SW19 to pose with fans at a photoshoot for the sponsor Evian. She also met Princess Kate to talk about their experiences queuing to enter the famous grass court tournament.
