Dak Prescott’s Contract Debate Spotlights Patrick Mahomes’ Consistency as Jalen Hurts and Co Fail to Win the Super Bowl: “Ain’t Getting There”

PM HURTS DAK

Dak Prescott’s future and contract is still a debatable topic. The Dallas Cowboys are slightly reducing Prescott’s huge salary cap hit by reworking his contract. Although it is done to reportedly keep him happy, will that be enough for Prescott and the franchise?

There is no doubt that Prescott is counted in the list of impressive quarterbacks. However, his performances in significant games lands him in trouble and such contractual debates. Recently, when he was being discussed, James Jones and other co-hosts talked about the existing problem of Prescott, along with a comparison to Patrick Mahomes.

Dak Prescott and his consistency issue!

In a recent episode of SPEAK, Dave Helman joined Joy Taylor, LeSean McCoy, and James Jones to discuss the Cowboys and their commitment to Dak Prescott beyond this year.

Jones highlighted Prescott’s problem, saying, “He’s going to do well in the regular season, he’s good at that regular championship, he’s gonna give you that may win the division, he’s done that, [but as soon as] we gets to the playoffs when it really matters, when the lights are on number four, he always seems to fail. So, that leads me to this point – you give him all this money knowing what the results are, so, it’s an expensive losing effort in the end.” As per Jones, this situation leads him to ponder over whether he deserves his high salary or not.

Former basketball small forward also brought up some names, including Micah Parsons, CeeDee Lamb, and Zack Martin, praising their plays and the need to pay them their money. Chiming in the debate, McCoy compared him to other quarterbacks like Patrick Mahomes, and explained Prescott’s weaknesses as well as strengths, “If we talking about about winning Super Bowls….it’s one dude getting there consistently and winning a Super Bowl, Matthew Stafford stole one in between there, but Patty [Patrick] Mahomes is the one that’s consistently getting there.

We got other guys like Jalen Hurts, Josh Allen, Lamar Jackson, and Kirk Cousins who just got paid. Baker Mayfield, who just got paid, they ain’t getting there like that. So when it comes to Dak Prescott, the dude is coming off an all pro year runner up to the MVP.”

All in all, on one hand, Jones feels giving away the money to Prescott would be risky as the QB is inconsistent in the playoffs, while McCoy believes that although he has been inconsistent, the commitment is real for Prescott, as he is still at the same level as other mentioned quarterbacks, excluding Mahomes.  Meanwhile, the Cowboys reportedly have decided to save some cap space, while making the QB happy and safe in the franchise.

New incentive for Dak Prescott?

The Cowboys are adjusting Dak Prescott’s contract to ease their salary cap burden. They have converted a $5 million roster bonus into a signing bonus, reducing his 2024 cap hit by $4 million, adjusting it to about $55 million. This move helps the team financially while keeping Prescott happy

His current contract is worth $160 million over 4 years, with $126 million guaranteed and an average annual salary of $40 million. Despite earning $29 million in salary for 2024, his cap hit remains high.  If Prescott was to leave, the Cowboys would face a significant dead cap hit of $66.9 million, highlighting the importance of restructuring the deal.
