Patrick Mahomes soldiered on to lead the Kansas City Chiefs to victory over the Houston Texans just days after suffering an ankle sprain, so how did the 29-year-old quarterback produce the turnaround and who is the mystery woman that helped?
There was a hint of deja vu to 2023 in Week 15 when the star of the team limped off the field in a victory over the Cleveland Browns, with supporters at the Arrowhead Stadium fearing their lynchpin could be sidelined just before the NFL Playoffs.
However, he rebounded in fine form to throw for 260 yards and a touchdown from 41 attempts on Saturday, December 21 as he led his side to their 14th win of the season as the Chiefs find themselves poised to clinch the regular season AFC Conference lead if the Buffalo Bills falter. And based on Mahomes’ performance, you would have never thought he was injured and that’s due to the efforts of Julie Frymyer, the longtime trainer, conditioner and physiotherapist of the star.
Now into her sixth season with Andy Reid’s team, the QB’s injury was no new situation for her after he also sustained the same ailment against the Jacksonville Jaguars in 2023 so she wasted no time getting him back up to speed. The three-time Super Bowl champion was required to show up for early morning and late night treatment in a 5pm-7am-9:30pm cycle as they worked hard on making sure his injury was swiftly cured.
And the carefully designed schedule ensured that Mahomes could continue studying film ahead of the Texans to figure out how to break down their defense and prove to CJ Stroud that he’s still the man to beat, as well as attending Chiefs’ practise.
And the effort worked a treat as he took to the field to spur his side on to their latest win and thus maintain his excellent record of appearing in 100% of his side’s games since 2019, when he had to sit out of a clash with the Denver Broncos.
Who do the Chiefs play next?
The Kansas City Chiefs will next be in action in the 2024/25 NFL season on Christmas Day as they take on the Pittsburgh Steelers, who lost their Week 16 clash with Lamar Jackson’s Baltimore Ravens. The December 25 clash will take place at the Acrisure Stadium in Pennsylvania, with kick-off from 13:00 ET/10:00 PT. The game will be broadcast live on Netflix.
