The first round of the 2024 NFL Draft has come and gone, and while plenty of players know where they will be playing next season, there are still hundreds of names waiting to hear their name called. One player who knows his next destination is wide receiver Xavier Worthy, who was drafted 28th overall by the Super Bowl champion Kansas City Chiefs.
The AFC West side traded up with the Buffalo Bills in order to land the speedy former Texas Longhorn, and Worthy made it clear he is ready to get to work with Patrick Mahomes after meeting with local media. “Everybody dreams of playing with Patrick Mahomes, [he is] one of the greatest QBs of all time,” Worthy stated during the Zoom press conference on Thursday night. “To be able to play for him, everybody talks about it, but I’ve been saying for a while that I’m going to be a Chief. So I just put it in the air, and now that I’m here, it’s amazing.”
Worthy raised eyebrows at the scouting combine when he broke the record in the 40-yard dash with a time of 4.21. His pick comes after the Chiefs signed Marquise ‘Hollywood’ Brown, who ran a 4.27 when he came out in the draft back in 2019. It’s clear the Chiefs have put a focus on adding speed to their receiving corps, with general manager Brett Veach noting the two players will make a mark.
“It’s a speed game and the more speed you have on the field, the harder it is for defenses to take away different elements of the game,” Veach said. “Anytime you can add speed and add a guy with that type of versatility, I think you’re going to be interested. Just our ability to play vertical and have speed on the field at all times and having Xavier and Hollywood.”
Mahomes excited by Worthy pick
The pick was clearly well received by Mahomes, who tweeted two emojis: the first was of a person running, and the second of a smiley face with sunglasses.

The pick comes after Worthy previously told USA Today that he would love to go to the Chiefs. “In a perfect world, I definitely would want to go to the Chiefs,” Worthy said. “Just the way Patrick Mahomes and the Chiefs improvise and use you. They had Tyreek Hill. The way they used him, I feel like that would be a perfect fit for me.”
