MLB prospect fighting for his life in hospital after horror car crash with ‘three men dead’
SAN FRANCISCO GIANTS prospect Antonio Jimenez, 24, is fighting for his life after being involved in a tragic crash in the Dominican Republic.
The young pitcher was one of four involved in the collision in his home city of San Pedro de Macoris on Monday morning. Per reports from local outlet conexion23com, the crash occurred when an SUV struck two mopeds in front of the offices of telecom company Altice.
Jimenez was rushed to hospital with significant injuries including lacerations and fractures to his femur and spine. He remains in hospital under intensive care.
The three other men involved in the horror crash were reported to have been pronounced dead on the scene. They were named as Alfredo García, 28, Israel Carpio, and Víctor de Jesus.
The Giants said in a statement to the Mail: “We are aware of the tragic car accident involving one of our players, Antonio Jimenez, and are in the process of gathering more information. “Out of respect for everyone affected and due to the ongoing investigation, we will refrain from further comment at this time.”
Jimenez joined the Giants as a free agent last December. He started his MLB career with the Tampa Bay Rays in 2018. He would spend six years moving between the team’s lower league affiliates before returning to free agency in November 2024.
He was picked up by the Giants just a month later and immediately assigned to affiliate club the Sacramento River Cats. As well as featuring for the River Cats, Jimenez has spent the last two seasons playing winter league ball for Dominican team Toros del Este.
They released a statement on the incident that read: “Our prayers are with our pitcher Antonio Jiménez, who suffered several injuries in a regrettable traffic accident. “We extend our condolences and prayers to the families of the victims who lost their lives in the incident.”
The left-handed relief pitcher has recorded a career ERA of 3.43 from 422 innings in the minor leagues, giving up 179 runs while striking out 471 batters. This season he has managed three starts for the River Cats, earning an ERA of 3.55 across 45 innings, with 19 runs and 56 strikeouts. He is yet to make his major league debut.
