The Los Angeles pitcher and his wife Kayla share the devastating loss of their newborn daughter

Los Angeles Dodgers pitcher Alex Vesia has shared devastating personal news that has shaken the baseball world.  Days after stepping away from the World Series without explanation, Vesia and his wife, Kayla, revealed the heartbreaking loss of their newborn daughter, Sterling Sol.

The couple’s announcement drew an outpouring of support from teammates, fans, and even the opposing Toronto Blue Jays, a rare show of unity that has reminded many of the humanity that exists beyond the game.

In an emotional Instagram post shared late Friday, the couple wrote, “Our beautiful daughter went to heaven Sunday, October 26th.  “There are no words to describe the pain we’re going through, but we hold her in our hearts and cherish every second we had with her. Our little angel, we love you forever & you’re with us always.”

The message was accompanied by a black-and-white photo from the hospital, with both parents holding their daughter. They went on to thank the Dodgers organization, their fans, and the medical staff who cared for Kayla and Sterling.

“Thank you to the Dodgers for their understanding and support during this time. Our baseball family showed up for us and we wouldn’t be able to do this without them. Every person we came across was truly so incredible,” the Vesias wrote.

Baseball world unites in a powerful tribute

When news of the loss spread, the response from across the sport was immediate and heartfelt.  During the World Series, Dodgers players took the field wearing Vesia’s jersey number, 51, stitched onto their caps as a tribute.

The gesture soon extended beyond team lines – Blue Jays relievers, their opponents in the championship series, also added “51” to their hats in solidarity with the grieving pitcher.

What began as a simple sign of respect turned into something far greater. Inspired fans from both teams began donating $51 each to Toronto’s SickKids Hospital, one of the world’s leading pediatric care centers, in honor of Vesia’s number.

According to The Toronto Star, the hospital confirmed it had received several donations from U.S.-based fans, often accompanied by notes referencing the Dodgers pitcher and his daughter.

One Blue Jays fan summed up the feeling in a viral Reddit post that read, “Sometimes, sports don’t matter. This is one of those moments.” That post sparked a new wave of donations, messages of support, and shared grief from across the baseball community.

Dodgers first baseman Freddie Freeman and his wife, Chelsea, were among the first to publicly offer their condolences.

Chelsea, who has spoken openly about her own traumatic experiences during pregnancy, commented on Kayla’s Instagram post: “Love you guys so much. I can’t stop thinking about you and your beautiful angel.”

The Dodgers organization also released a statement, saying, “We are heartbroken for Alex and Kayla and send them all our love during this unimaginably difficult time. Alex is and always will be a part of our Dodgers family.”

A family’s strength amid unimaginable loss

Vesia’s absence from the Dodgers’ roster during the Fall Classic initially left fans confused.  The left-handed reliever had been one of Los Angeles’ most dependable bullpen arms during their title defense, and his sudden withdrawal was described only as a “deeply personal family matter.”

When the reason became known, it turned the World Series into something far more emotional than anyone expected.  Alex Vesia, 29, debuted in MLB with the Miami Marlins in 2020 before being traded to Los Angeles a year later.

Since joining the Dodgers, he’s become a key figure in their pitching rotation and helped the team capture the 2024 World Series title.

Off the field, he and Kayla, a social media creator with a strong following, often shared moments of their life together, from travel posts to behind-the-scenes glimpses of life in the majors.

The two married in 2024 after several years together and had recently expressed excitement about becoming first-time parents.

The tragedy has left a deep mark not just on the Dodgers, but on the sport as a whole. In an era where fierce rivalries often dominate headlines, the response to the Vesias’ loss has shown a rare side of professional sports, one of empathy, unity, and shared humanity.

For now, Alex and Kayla are focusing on healing privately, supported by teammates, family, and fans who continue to send messages of love.

The baseball world, from Los Angeles to Toronto and beyond, has stood still to honor Sterling Sol, a tiny life that touched thousands, and a reminder that compassion can bridge even the fiercest of divides.
