Patrick Mahomes doesn’t hide his opinion on Buffalo Bills fans as the Kansas City Chiefs add another chapter to what has been a storied rivalry between the two franchises in recent years
Patrick Mahomes has made it clear what he thinks of Buffalo Bills fans ahead of the highly anticipated game between the two teams, which comes after fans questioned the star quarterback’s interaction with a referee.
With the next section in the rivalry set to be written, Mahomes spoke to reporters about the clashes he and Josh Allen have had over the years, as the fans have played a part as well. The battle between the two star quarterbacks occurs after Mahomes laughed off Andy Reid after a celebration.
“I mean, they don’t like us. I mean, that’s pretty – they do not like the Chiefs,” Mahomes explained to reporters Wednesday when asked about the environment and the fans whenever Kansas City plays Buffalo.
“But I mean, it is a cool environment. I love playing in like historic stadiums. And that stadium has had so many great players play in it. And who knows, it might be the last time that we get the opportunity to play there. And it’ll be a great challenge for us.
“And they’re loud. And that’s what you want. You want to go and go in and be in a hostile environment. That’s what football when you watch on TV as a kid growing up is the environments you want to play in. And so obviously, they’re not rooting for us. But you get to bond together as a team and get to go into a historic stadium and play in a great environment.”
In his career, Mahomes is 5-4 against the Bills, though Buffalo is only one of four teams that the star quarterback has a record under .500 in regular-season matchups. In the regular season, Mahomes is 1-4 against the Bills, 0-2 against the Indianapolis Colts, and 1-2 versus the Philadelphia Eagles and Tennessee Titans.
Of note, the Chiefs are 4-0 in the playoffs against the Bills, showing that Mahomes can perform when the lights are the brightest. Considering his history against Allen and the Bills, Mahomes was effusive in his praise for his contemporary and the job the 29-year-old has done in Buffalo.
“To be that size and be able to move like that. I mean, I think he’s, he’s done so many great things as far as throwing the football and stuff like that,” Mahomes continued to reporters.
But the way he’s able to extend plays and get close to the sideline to make these big time throws on the field, that stuff is special. And so he’s, he’s gotten better and better each and every year. I think that’s something I’ve seen him and so that’s something I try to do for myself as well. And so he’s a great football player.”
In the end, the Chiefs star quarterback believes being able to play in a hostile environment like Buffalo can help Kansas City coalesce as a unit, especially after a rough start to the season.
“I think it’s cool, honestly, just because like you have to bond together as a team,” the 30-year-old posited. “I mean, you do that Arrowhead and you kind of have the crowd behind you. And whenever stuff isn’t going well, you can kind of feed off the crowd and stuff like that.
“Whereas when you’re on the road, you just have your teammates, and your coaches and you kind of have to bond together and there’s going to be adversity and it’s how you can bond together and come out on the other side of that and come out on the right way with a win.”
