Andy Reid fires subtle shot at officials as Chiefs hit controversial seven-year low against Jaguars

Andy Reid’s unit came into Monday Night Football on a two-game winning steak, but were downed by a one-yard touchdown run from Trevor Lawrence that came with 23 seconds left on the clock.
The Jaguars QB, wearing a stunning throwback uniform, was in that position after Chiefs safety Chamarri Conner was flagged for pass interference on Brian Thomas Jr.
With seconds remaining, Lawrence tripped and fell to the ground, before he got back on his feet, found a lane and scrambled into the endzone to give Jacksonville a dramatic 31-28 victory.
Kansas City, of course, are no strangers to late drama of their own, and have won plenty of games in the final moments. In the past, some rival fans have also made baseless claims that they benefit from NFL officiating. On Monday night, both of those things went against them.
Chiefs’ discipline against Jaguars worst since 2018
Against the Jags, KC had 13 penalties for 109 yards. That is the most flags, and yards lost, since they had 13 for 135 in the legendary 54-51 Monday night loss to the Los Angeles Rams in November 2018.
Two of those were costly pass interference calls, which led to touchdowns for the Jaguars. Wide receiver Hollywood Brown also picked up a 15-yard unnecessary roughness penalty, while there were four flags on Kansas City’s special-teams units.
It was the Chiefs’ worst show of discipline in seven years, and Big Red wasn’t happy.
What did Reid say on the penalties against Kansas City?
He hinted that he didn’t agree with some of the calls from officials, but noted his team need to ‘take care of business’ themselves. “We obviously had 13 penalties to their four,” Coach Reid said.
“Whether I agree with them or don’t agree with them, it doesn’t matter. They called them. “And so, you have that many penalties, you give up field position.
“You can out stat them to death, but it doesn’t matter. It’s the score that matters, and we’ve got to take care of business there.”
As Big Red noted, the Chiefs actually out-performed the Jaguars on offense. Patrick Mahomes, who has already made a candid admission about this season, went 29/41 for 318 yards, one touchdown and one interception.
He also rushed for 60 yards on the ground, with running backs Kareem Hunt and Isiah Pacheco adding 85 more between them. Lawrence, meanwhile, went 18/25 for 221 yards, one TD and one INT, while Jacksonville added 109 yards rushing.
Of course, it’s only the score that matters, and the Chiefs will surely feel those 13 penalties cost them Monday night.
It could have been even worse too, with referees picking up a flag for offensive pass interference on Travis Kelce’s touchdown, and also appearing to miss a pass interference call on the play Lawrence was picked off.
Both calls were referenced on the MNF broadcast, with ESPN rules analyst Russell Yurk suggesting the officials were wrong on both occasions. Rival fans were quick to react to those moments, as well as the penalties that did go against Kansas City.
Fans react to missed calls and Chiefs ill-discipline
“Refs got a Chiefs jersey under that uniform, confirmed,” one wrote of the missed calls.
ESPN rules analyst Russell Yurk: “That’s a big miss. That should’ve been pass interference.”

“It’s time for the refs to set up that Super Bowl rematch that nobody wants,” another joked.
“Mahomes is so unlikeable as a player. Bro literally just walks up to those refs on a call he doesn’t like and always gets the benefit of doubt. This is why 99% of the country can’t stand the Chiefs,” a third claimed.
“The refs love them some Chiefs. Every goddamn season, man,” a fourth wrote. Others though, including former NFL quarterback Robert Griffin III, suggested there was no refereeing conspiracy.
“Can’t say the refs helped the Chiefs this time,” Griffin posted on X. “Special teams penalties will kill you in the NFL. Bad loss for the Chiefs. Should’ve won by 10,” another wrote.
“Chiefs shot themselves in the foot with penalties,” a third concluded. Following Monday’s defeat, Kansas City are now 2-3, sitting third in the AFC West.
There is work to do if the Chiefs hope to make a playoff run, and next face a tough Sunday night matchup against the Detroit Lions.
