‘I just want the headband back’: Chiefs fan speaks out following viral video

After winning against the New York Giants, Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes went to the stands in the end zone and handed his headband to a young fan. It was then taken out of his hands by a Giants fan. The moment was captured on video and has since gone viral. “I just want that band back really bad,” said Joey Masters.
Masters said the Sept. 21 game was his first Chiefs game after being a fan for several years. He got the tickets for his 10th birthday and saw the Chiefs beat the Giants, 22-9. “It was fun,” said Masters. “It was cool to look at the stadium. We got to watch all the Chiefs warm up and play.”
He and his mom were in the front row behind the end zone. The Penfield, New York, resident says he got his hat signed by Drue Tranquil and a glove from Trent McDuffie. The incident with Mahomes’ headband happened after the game. “Patrick Mahomes walked over to me, locked eyes with me, tries to give me his headband and the woman just swoops in and snatches it from me,” said Masters. It left both Joey and his mom, Mindy, stunned as the woman turned and took off up the lower-level staircase. “It was such a great day,” said Mindy. “The players were amazing with us, the fans were, and just to have one person swoop in and take that from him is heartbreaking for a mother to watch.”
Mindy says a family friend posted the video to TikTok. A woman who has identified herself as the person who took the headband posted an apology video to the same platform and said she wants to get the headband to Joey. The Masters are working to get in contact with her. KCTV has reached out to the woman for comment. “I don’t want her to get hate mail, don’t want her to get death threats,” said Mindy. “Just give the child his headband back.”
Mindy noted the overwhelming support they’ve received and says she’s thankful to their community and Chiefs Kingdom. The video was also seen by Tavia Hunt, the wife of Chiefs chairman and CEO Clark Hunt. She asked her followers on social media to reach out to her if they know the young fan. KCTV has shared the Masters’ contact information with the team.
