Wimbledon wildcards
Wimbledon, which will be staged from July 3 to 16 on the London lawns, has announced the first wild cards for the main tournament draws.
As for the women’s draw, eyes fall on the five-time winner of this Grand Slam Venus Williams: the 43-year-old returns to London after her last appearance in 2021. The other non-British tennis player on this list is Elina Svitolina.
The Ukrainian tennis player, former world number three, reached the All England Club semifinal in 2019: it is her best result so far. The other tennis players announced are all British: Katie Boulter, Jodie Burrage, Harriet Dar, Katie Swan and Heather Watson.
Moving on to the men’s circuit, the parameters are very similar. Almost all of them are British, while so far there is only one exception. As for the latter, the wild card for David Goffin has been announced. The peak of the Belgian’s career was a few years, between 2017 and 2019; despite this, at Wimbledon he reached his best result, the quarterfinals, also last year.
In order to be confirmed at the All England Club, an invitation was required, to avoid qualifying. The British make up the picture: Liam Broady, Jan Choinski, Arthur Fery, George Loffhagen, Ryan Peniston. Some of them have already been to London, to play Queen’s.
This is the case, for example, of Peniston, who was defeated by Rune; as well as Choinski, who instead lost at the hands of Lorenzo Musetti. In doubles, there is the return of Jack Sock, doubles slam champion, with John Isner for an all-US men’s doubles.
