Patrick Mahomes’ short and emotional reaction to father’s 18-month sobriety

Pat Mahomes Sr. didn’t post a long caption. Just a photo of two puppies resting on his lap and a short note: “18 months.”

The message was simple, but the meaning wasn’t lost-especially on his son. Patrick Mahomes dropped a single-word comment beneath the post: “Proud.” Quiet, direct, and maybe more powerful than anything else he’s said publicly on the matter.

For the Mahomes family, the past year hasn’t been easy. Pat Sr., a former MLB pitcher and ever-present figure in his son’s career, was arrested just days before Super Bowl LVIII on a felony DWI charge-his third or more, according to public records. While Patrick was preparing to face the 49ers under the brightest lights in football, his dad was facing a different kind of pressure back in Texas.

But 2025 has looked different.

From Mistake to Milestone: Mahomes Sr. Gets Green Light to Travel Again

This summer, a judge granted Mahomes Sr. permission to leave the state for a few meaningful moments-first to attend Patrick’s charity golf event in Las Vegas in May, and now to watch the Chiefs’ preseason opener in Glendale on August 9 against the Arizona Cardinals. It’s not just a casual visit. Court documents show he had to formally request travel, undergo testing, and remain in compliance with probation terms.

It’s the latest sign that he’s committed to the work behind the scenes. According to attorney Joseph D. Murphy, Mahomes Sr. entered a guilty plea in August 2024 and has remained sober since. “Our client is now living a sober life,”Murphy told CBS Sports, noting that his progress helped secure a probation recommendation.

Patrick has largely kept quiet about the situation, but insiders close to the Chiefs say he’s stayed emotionally close to his father through it all. The two have always shared a bond rooted in sports, competition, and family. “He taught me how to compete,”Patrick said in a 2023 interview with People.

The elder Mahomes might not be a weekly headline anymore, but for him, being present-whether in the stands, on the sidelines, or just holding puppies-is the win that matters most. And for Patrick, a simple word seems to say it all
