Brittany Mahomes shares the baby name she rejected from Sterling — and a sneak peek into her nursery

Brittany Mahomes listened to her 3-year-old’s baby name suggestion … and then promptly let it go.  “My daughter wants me to name her Elsa. She was set on it for a while, but obviously we’re not doing that!” Brittany told TODAY.com in an interview in December 2024.  Instead of a name inspired by “Frozen,” Brittany and her husband, Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes, went with something a little warmer: Golden Raye. Golden, who was born on Jan. 12, joined sister Sterling and brother Bronze, 2.

Though Brittany and Patrick were immediately in agreement on Golden, they struggled with her middle name.  “We went back and forth for a while,” Brittany said. “But the one we settled on, we really, really love.”

It’s safe to say Sterling and Bronze are excited about their family’s new addition. In December, Bronze was more than ready to meet his “baby sissy.”  “All he says is ‘I want baby sissy,’ and then he’ll ask to see my stomach … although I’m not sure if it’s registered that an actual human is coming,” Brittany said. “And Sterling is completely obsessed. She loves to play with babies.”

Brittany, who experienced sickness and exhaustion during her first trimester, praised Patrick, her high school sweetheart, for being the “most supportive husband in the world.”  “If I’m complaining or I’m in a bad mood, he gets it. He’s not gonna argue with me,” she said. “He’s not gonna push my buttons. He knows.”

Brittany opened up to TODAY while discussing a partnership with Crate & Kids. The former professional soccer player worked with the furniture brand to design Golden’s “super rosy” and a “little bit moody” nursery.

Golden’s modern room features a sherpa swivel glider and a sleek bassinet upholstered with vegan leather. When Golden is a bit older, she will move into a white convertible crib.

The space also features sweet accents including a print that reads, “Let your light shine,” a custom name sign and a blanket monogrammed with Golden’s initials.  “I’m a very modern-type mom. I like to keep things simple and sleek, but I also love a good cozy, homey vibe,” she said.

NURSERY GK “When I think of a baby girl, I automatically go pink,” Brittany says of her nursery inspiration.

For Brittany, the most important element was a “super comfy chair” to relax in while breastfeeding.  “As the mom of a newborn you spend a lot of time in that chair!” Brittany noted.  In Golden’s closet, you’ll find an array of onesies and pjs. Brittany said she’s learned her lessson about fancy newborn outfits.

“When people (first) have kids, they buy all these outfits to dress them up in — but then they live in pajamas. At least my kids do,” Brittany explained. “You just need the simple basics. I feel like everybody tries to go way overboard.”
