Patrick and Brittany Mahomes’ team announces major ‘first ever’ move in US history

THE Kansas City Current have announced plans to participate in a huge soccer tournament.

The NWSL Shield winners – owned by Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes and his wife, Brittany – will take part in the first North American edition of World Sevens Football in early December.

It will see eight teams compete in a 7v7 soccer tournament in Fort Lauderdale, Florida.  KC Current assistant coach Milan Ivanovic said: “Our team thrives on intensity, creativity, and competition which fit perfectly with the 7v7 style of play.

“We’re proud to represent Kansas City and the NWSL on the international stage and to continue pushing the women’s game forward.

“The growth of women’s football is accelerating globally, and events like World Sevens Football help showcase the skill and excitement that define our sport.  “We can’t wait to bring the KC Current energy to Fort Lauderdale.”

The Current will not be the only NWSL side competing for the $5million prize pool.  Tournament organizers have confirmed the San Diego Wave will also take part.

Among the other teams are Club America and Club Tigres from Mexico, Flamengo from Brazil, Deportivo Cali from Colombia and AFC Toronto from Canada.

The competition will take place from December 5 to 7 at Beyond Bancard Field.  World Sevens Football debuted with a European edition in Portugal earlier this year.

Bayern Munich won the tournament, with Manchester United finishing second.  Manchester City, Paris Saint-Germain, Benfica, Roma, Ajax and Rosengard were the other teams involved.
