Chiefs’ Andy Reid announces good news for Ptrick Mahomes
Andy Reid and Patrick Mahomes led the Kansas City Chiefs to their third straight win in Week 8 of the 2025 NFL season, taking down Marcus Mariota and the Washington Commanders 28-7. Now, sitting with a 5-3 record, the Chiefs turn their attention to Week 9, hitting the road to face Josh Allen and the Buffalo Bills in a rematch of last season’s AFC Championship Game.
The Chiefs’ offense was relatively healthy against the AFC West rival Las Vegas Raiders in Week 7, excluding left tackle Josh Simmons, who was away from the team due to personal reasons. Rashee Rice also returned from a six-game suspension and has recorded three touchdowns over the past two games. But against the Raiders, another key piece for Kansas City’s offense went down with an injury.
Trey Smith was selected by the Chiefs in the sixth round of the 2021 NFL Draft and has held down the starting right guard spot ever since. The former Tennessee Volunteers standout helped Kansas City win its last two Super Bowls and earned his first Pro Bowl nod last season. However, against Las Vegas, Smith was forced to leave early with back spasms.
Leading up to the Week 9 matchup against the Bills, Smith was a limited participant in practice on Wednesday and Thursday but returned as a full participant on Friday. He’s officially listed as questionable for Sunday’s game, though Reid expects him to play, giving Patrick Mahomes one of his starting offensive linemen back. “Andy Reid expects Chiefs RG Trey Smith to play against the Bills,” The Kansas City Star’s Pete Sweeney wrote on X.

Chiefs running back Isiah Pacheco, on the other hand, wasn’t as lucky, already ruled out for Week 9. Mahomes and the Chiefs will take on Allen and the Bills on Sunday at 4:25 p.m. ET at Highmark Stadium. The game will be televised nationally on CBS.
