THE Kansas City Chiefs made the decision to cut a two-time Super Bowl champion from their roster.  Andy Reid parted ways with the veteran to bring a familiar face who’s also a Super Bowl hero ahead of Week 9.

Kansas City is coming off a Week 8 rout win over the Washington Commanders on Monday Night Football.  Days after their third-straight win, the Chiefs decided to let go of a veteran.

The Chiefs released pass-rusher Malik Herring on Wednesday.  In a corresponding move, the team has reunited with defensive tackle Mike Pennel on its 53-man roster.

The Kansas City Chiefs released pass rusher Malik Herring on Wednesday

Herring originally joined Kansas City as a free agent after the 2021 NFL Draft.  He’s only played with the Chiefs throughout his four-year career.

The Georgia product has been on and off the team’s active roster for years.  Herring made his debut in the 2022 season and has since appeared in 32 games.

During his four campaigns, he posted just 1.5 sacks, three tackles for loss, and six quarterback hits.  Herring also forced one fumble and recovered one fumble.

Luckily for him, it’s likely he re-signs with Kansas City and is placed on the practice squad after he clears waivers.  Pennel, meanwhile, will join the Chiefs for the third time.

After beginning his career with the Green Bay Packers, where he played for three seasons, Pennel signed with Kansas City in 2019 and won a Super Bowl in his first campaign.

Then, in 2023, after bouncing around teams for two seasons, Pennel rejoined the Chiefs and contributed to yet another Super Bowl victory.  He signed with the Cincinnati Bengals during the summer and appeared in seven games.

But Pennel didn’t impress, posting just 15 total tackles and one tackle loss.  Kansas City added Pennel after recently losing rookie Omarr Norman-Lott for the season.

The Chiefs will certainly need defensive line help against the run as they’ll face the arch-rival Buffalo Bills in Week 9.  Bills Pro Bowl running back James Cook is rushing for 6.0 yards per carry and most recently ran the ball 19 times for 216 yards and two touchdowns against the Carolina Panthers in Week 8.
