Concerning Development Emerges for Chiefs Starter Before Lions Game
The Kansas City Chiefs desperately need a win against the Detroit Lions on “Sunday Night Football” after a sluggish start to the season. The Chiefs enter the contest 2-3 after dropping a winnable contest to the Jacksonville Jaguars on “Monday Night Football” in Week 5.
With the Denver Broncos defeating the New York Jets on Sunday morning, the Chiefs would fall behind two games in the AFC West with a loss to the Lions.
Hours before the Chiefs were set to play the Lions, Kansas City revealed a concerning development for the offensive line that could affect the play of quarterback Patrick Mahomes. Chiefs starting left tackle Josh Simmons was added to the injury report for a personal issue and is questionable to play against Detroit.

Simmons’ absence would be a huge blow to Kansas City’s offense. The 2025 first-round pick has been a key part of an offensive line that has allowed Mahomes to be sacked only seven times through the first five games.
The Lions have a formidable defensive line, led by star defensive end Aidan Hutchinson. Hutchinson has five sacks in Detroit’s first five games. Detroit has a total of 16 sacks on defense. In addition to Hutchinson, linebacker Al-Quadin Muhammad has been a problem for opposing offenses, recording 3.5 sacks.
If Simmons is not able to play, Wanya Morris and Jaylon Moore are the potential backup options for Kansas City.
The Chiefs had significant problems at left tackle last season. Offensive guard Joe Thuney was plugged in at left tackle during their postseason in January and February amid struggles to protect Mahomes’ blindside. Simmons has been a nice addition at left tackle early in the season.
