Patrick Mahomes reveals advice Travis Kelce and Tom Brady gave him about his expensive watch hobby

Patrick Mahomes has revealed the words of wisdom Travis Kelce and Tom Brady have shared with him around watch collecting.  The Kansas City Chiefs quarterback posed for an interview with GQ on Tuesday and announced a new partnership with luxurious Swiss watchmaker Hublot.

Mahomes talked about his growing collection, his tradition of buying a new watch before every NFL season and how he first got into them while around MLB locker rooms with his dad, Patrick Mahomes Sr.

But he also shared some of the advice that fellow quarterback Brady and teammate Kelce have given him in recent years.  Brady has developed a reputation as a watch connoisseur, often flaunting his expensive taste while commentating on NFL games for Fox. The Jacob & Co. Caviar Tourbillon watch he wore to this year’s Super Bowl cost $740,000.

When asked if there were any athletes he spoke with or looked to for watch advice, Mahomes said: ‘When I was younger, I watched a lot of LeBron [James] and what he would wear because he has such good style and is really diverse with his watch collection.

Now that I’ve been in the NFL a little bit, I get some advice from Tom [Brady]. And Tom’s experienced as far as watch collecting goes, and so I’ll ask him for little tidbits here and there about stuff that he likes.

‘He gets some stuff that I’ve never even heard of, so he’s spent his time researching in the watch collecting world, and so that’s where I want to be at one day as far as my collection.

He always says the more people you know, the better. You have to know the right people to get some of these watches.

‘But I think more than anything, he just says, the confidence you wear the watch with makes the watch. He’s a guy who has the confidence, and his watch collection states that.’

Mahomes is currently gearing up for the Chiefs’ first game of the new NFL season on Friday night.

The Chiefs were demolished 40-22 by the Philadelphia Eagles in the Super Bowl in February but begin their attempt at reaching a fourth-straight NFL showpiece against the Los Angeles Chargers in Brazil.

The Mahomes-Kelce relationship has been a huge part of the Chiefs’ recent success and the pair are close friends off the field.  Taylor Swift’s fiance is known to take his style very seriously and that extends to his wristwear, according to Mahomes.

‘I think in general when you talk with Travis about style— for a while he had this persona that he’s not a very intelligent guy, but he’s kind of a savant when it comes to things,’ Mahomes continued.

‘And so the way he’s able to pull off these styles and wear the watches that he wears and make everything kind of go together, he can have a million different styles.

‘One week he can wear a watch one way, and then he can wear the same watch in a completely different style the next week. And so just getting advice from him as well has been something that I’ve done.

‘He probably thinks more about style when wearing a watch. He’s not necessarily about the history of it, but he does have more history in that mind than you would think he does.’
