The Chicago Sky broke a five-game losing streak with major news: the return of Angel Reese after a back injury. The rebounding star came back strong against the Washington Mystics at CareFirst Arena, delivering a dominant performance with 15 points and 11 rebounds.  However, the relief over her return was short-lived. With six minutes left in the second quarter, Reese hit the floor hard after a play involving rookie Kiki Iriafen. Although the pass led to a Kamilla Cardoso basket, Reese’s fall raised immediate concern. The lack of a foul call triggered coach Tyler Marsh’s frustration, who was hit with a technical foul after confronting the officials during a Mystics timeout.

Known for his calm demeanor, Marsh had to be held back from the officiating crew after walking to midcourt visibly upset by the lack of a call on Reese’s fall. It was an uncharacteristic but understandable reaction: Reese is a cornerstone of the team, and losing her again would be a devastating blow.  In 22 games this season, Angel Reese has started every one, averaging 13.8 points, leading the WNBA with 12.5 rebounds per game, and topping her team in assists with 3.7 per outing. But her impact goes beyond the numbers-she’s the competitive soul of the Sky.

Shakira Austin fuels tension with Reese

The game was already heated early on. Less than six minutes into the first quarter, Shakira Austin went one-on-one with Reese, scored, and taunted her with a “too small” gesture.  This wasn’t their first intense exchange. In a previous regular-season matchup, both Reese and Austin received technical fouls after a verbal confrontation. Even during the Unrivaled event, the two clashed, proving this rivalry is far from superficial.

A new WNBA rivalry brewing?

While much of the media spotlight is on Caitlin Clark vs. Angel Reese, another rivalry is quietly gaining traction: Reese vs. Shakira Austin. Sparks on the court, shared history, and intense clashes make this duel one of the most intriguing for fans.  With Angel Reese back and fired up, the Sky have reason to dream again. But one thing is clear: if referees don’t protect the league’s stars, tensions in the WNBA will only keep boiling over.
