Chicago Sky Under Fire for Angel Reese Announcement After Third Straight Loss

The Chicago Sky haven’t had an easy start to the WNBA season, facing a tough stretch of opponents. But they’ve also struggled significantly on both ends of the court.  After back-to-back blowout losses to the Indiana Fever and New York Liberty by a combined 60 points, their woes continued Sunday night against the Los Angeles Sparks.  For the third straight game, the Sky allowed their opponent to score over 90 points in regulation. While they were much more competitive in this game, they still fell 91–78, dropping to 0–3 on the season.

Following the loss, the team once again drew backlash from fans—this time for naming Angel Reese the “Player of the Game.”  Reese notched her second double-double of the young season, finishing with 13 points, 12 rebounds, four assists, and two steals in the loss. The Sky highlighted her performance on social media with a post that read, “double double for 5!!”

It marked the third consecutive game the Sky have handed out the honor despite a double-digit loss, a move that has not sat well with many fans who feel it sends the wrong message during a tough start to the season.

Fan reactions:

“Who cares? Win a game please!!!!” a fan said.

“You’re 0-3 this season. What happened to WE before ME?” Someone else added.

Another fan posted, “It means [explicit] and less when you lose!!!”

“Ain’t no player of the game when we suck. Good game Angel!” A fan reacted.

One more fan commented, “Team Social Media hoping a Reese Double Double will distract from the elephant in the room. Sky fans aren’t happy.”  The Sky remain one of the youngest teams in the WNBA, but their early-season struggles are raising concerns—especially after entering the year with hopes of building on last season’s 13–27 finish.

While Angel Reese has been a statistical bright spot, her individual production hasn’t yet translated to team success. Through three games, she’s averaging 9.0 points, 13.6 rebounds, and 2.0 assists.  Chicago is back in action on Tuesday night when they travel to face the 3–1 Phoenix Mercury. The status of rookie Hailey Van Lith remains uncertain after she missed Sunday’s game due to an ankle injury.
