Chicago Sky Coach Makes Angel Reese, Kamilla Cardoso Admission After Loss to Liberty

The first two games of the Chicago Sky season have been a rough introduction for first-year head coach Tyler Marsh.  He pinpointed one of the big reasons why after a 99-74 blowout loss to the New York Liberty on Thursday night.  The 25-point defeat combined with a 35-point demolition by Caitlin Clark and the Indiana Fever in its opening game gives Chicago the worst point differential (-60) through the first two games of a season in WNBA history.

With talented young players like forward Angel Reese and center Kamilla Cardoso looking out of rhythm to start the season, Marsh admitted that the performances showed him it is time to make a change.  Against New York, the “twin towers” duo of Reese and Cardoso combined for 8 points on 3-for-16 shooting from the field. The two 2024 first-round WNBA draft picks had a combined 19 points on 23 shots against the Fever.

In both games, those numbers were inflated by put-back attempts from Reese, who has gobbled up 15 offensive rebounds in two games. Marsh acknowledged that he was not getting his bigs enough organic looks through the flow of the offense.  “I think I need to be better about getting the ball inside to our posts,” the Sky coach admitted after Thursday’s loss.

His group of “posts” also includes center Elizabeth Williams, who is averaging 4.0 points and 6.5 rebounds off the bench in the first two games.  However, Marsh keyed in on Cardoso in particular, emphasizing his need to “be more intentional” about getting the 6-foot-7 Brazilian looks in the paint moving forward.

Nobody would be happier for Cardoso to get more touches than Reese, who spoke about their connection earlier this week.  “I encourage her a lot of times,” Reese said of her frontcourt partner. “I’m like, ‘Kill! You can kill everybody in front of you.'”  “That’s why I try to encourage her and push her as much as I can,” Reese explained, “because sometimes you don’t see the ball a lot when you’re running down, setting screens. I feel like we’re running, running, running.”
