Video: Angel Reese responds in best way after heated clash with Caitlin Clark

Angel Reese has never been shy about showing emotion, but the forward delivered a masterclass in restraint when asked about her latest dust-up with fellow phenomenon Caitlin Clark.  Midway through Sunday’s Chicago Sky-Indiana Fever matchup, Clark drove hard to the rim, drawing contact with Reese before tumbling to the hardwood. Clark immediately signaled for a coach’s challenge, believing the whistle should be overturned. Cameras caught Reese jawing at officials and pounding her chest in frustration as the replay review stretched on.

When the foul was ultimately upheld, the sequence looked like another combustible moment in the budding rivalry between two rookies whose college battles turned into must-see television.  Yet Reese’s post-game comments could not have been more matter-of-fact. “Basketball play, refs got it right, move on,” she told reporters, her expression as even as her tone.  The blunt dismissal stood in stark contrast to the in-game intensity replayed endlessly on social media, underscoring a lesson the 22-year-old says she learned quickly in the pros: pick your fights carefully-and pick even more carefully the moments you let them linger.

Reese finished the night with an efficient 14 points and 11 rebounds, her sixth double-double in nine contests, while Clark poured in 27 and dished nine assists to help Indiana prevail 89-82.  The result nudged the Fever ahead of Chicago in the early Eastern Conference standings and extended Indiana’s win streak to three, but the broader takeaway was simpler: two of the league’s brightest newcomers are already central characters in its most compelling theatre.

Rivalry roots and rookie reality checks

Their intertwined narratives date back to the 2023 NCAA title game, where Reese’s celebratory “you can’t see me” gesture toward Clark became an instant viral flashpoint. Pundits argued about sportsmanship; fans picked sides; women’s basketball found itself thrust onto mainstream talk-show rundowns usually reserved for NBA spats. Now, 15 months later, the pair’s every interaction is monitored for fresh friction.

That microscope can distort the view. Teammates say Reese is more pragmatist than provocateur behind the curtain, studying film into the early morning and quizzing veteran center Elizabeth Williams on pick-and-roll coverages.  Sky head coach Teresa Weatherspoon insists her forward’s fiery persona is a competitive tool, not a sideshow. “Angel plays with an edge, but she also understands accountability,” Weatherspoon noted after practice last week, adding that the rookie has cut her turnovers nearly in half since opening night.

Clark’s challenge on Sunday offered a snapshot of how both players are adapting to professional officiating, where the game’s speed leaves even seasoned refs relying on replay.  Reese admitted she initially thought the call would be reversed-hence the visible frustration-but credited the crew for “showing the right angles” before upholding the foul. “Once they made the decision it was time to get back on defense,” she said.

The moment speaks to a broader evolution in the WNBA’s officiating transparency. The league expanded its coach’s challenge rule this season, giving teams one per game on any personal foul, out-of-bounds, or goaltending call. Coaches win roughly 46 percent of challenges, according to league data, sharpening strategic calculations at the end of tight quarters. For rookies accustomed to college protocols, the nuance can be jarring-so can the reaction from tens of thousands watching in real time.

Reese’s terse sound bite, then, is less dismissal than declaration: the conversation she wants to have is about basketball, not theatrics. Her stat lines are already answering critics, and Chicago’s front-court pairing of Reese and 2021 Finals MVP Kahleah Copper looks increasingly dangerous as chemistry builds.  The next Sky-Fever showdown looms in July, and the hype machine will inevitably crank up again. If Sunday’s aftermath is any indication, Angel Reese plans to let her play – and a few choice words – set the tone.
